About the company

We are recruiting for a full-time, temporary Senior Library Assistant to work at one of the leading, higher educational, academical institutions. This role will be working 30 hours per week starting either Mid-August or the beginning of September

What you will be doing

The postholder is responsible for day-to-day operations of the campus Library, including the line management of the Library Assistant, and the co-ordination of library activities with those of other libraries within the College. Whilst the post holder is primarily based  in Ascot occasional travel to other campuses will be required and there will be periods of lone working.

The post holder also assists with providing support for the learning, teaching and research needs of staff and students under the direction of the Liaison Librarian. Duties may include delivering training sessions on a 1-1 basis and for larger groups

Service development and delivery

•     Managing the smooth running of the library, ensuring that the service point is staffed during core hours, activities undertaken, and staff cover arranged in the event of sickness or absence

•     Dealing with enquiries on all aspects of Library services and users’ changing requirements.

•     Ensuring the fabric of the library is in good order and fit for purposes; that space, furniture and equipment requirements are closely monitored

•     To monitor the use of the library and the services it provides, including keeping records and statistics.

•     To be responsible for safety and security within the Library, in consultation with the Library's Facilities Manager and Campus Safety Officer.

•     Handling the petty cash float, monitoring expenditure and cash reconciliation

Staff management

•     To be responsible for the line management of the Library Assistant, including appraisal, training, development and performance management

Information Literacy and training

•     Leading and/or assisting sessions such as Library inductions, group presentations, virtual presentations and tutorials and workshops

•     Running 1:1 appointments /Drop in sessions

Collection and Resource Management

•     Assisting with the selection, evaluation and provision of electronic and print resources

•     Assisting with the collection of reading lists from academic departments and faculties

•     Updating reading lists using Leganto (reading list platform) and supporting academic/administrative staff in use of the same 

•     Weeding and managing the disposal of stock

•     To carry out, where required, basic cataloguing and classification, back conversion and amendments to records.

Communication and user support

•     Providing support to users by monitoring the team’s online enquiry service (ASK) and answering non-standard enquiries (which may require further independent research to resolve)

•     Keeping records and statistics of library activities e.g. logging enquiry stats onto ASK

•     Assisting Library users in locating printed and online publications and explaining how to use e-journals, databases and referencing software

Continuing professional development

•     To show an active interest in new technologies including mobile technologies which may include testing devices and applications on multiple platforms to ensure compatibility

•     To pursue an active programme of self-development and continuing updating of skills and understanding of new technologies

•     To participate in Library Liaison teams and cross-library projects

Why you’ll be hired

  • Education to ‘A’ level, or equivalent qualifications or experience
  • A relevant professional/vocational qualification or equivalent experience
  • Experience in an appropriate library or frontline service environment, some of which should ideally have been gained in the higher education sector
  • Experience of supporting end users
  • Experience of supervising staff and/or line management experience
  • Experience of using and evaluating a range of printed and electronic information sources, including databases, software and Internet resources
  • Good team player, flexible and co-operative, coupled with high level of personal responsibility and initiative
  • Good oral, written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Good organisational skills and an ability to prioritise workloads and meet deadlines with a minimum of supervision
  • Excellent IT skills, including word processing, spreadsheets, use of social media and knowledge of mobile devices
  • Care and attention to detail and methodical approach to work
  • Ability to provide training both in formal sessions and on 1-to-1 basis
  • Ability to present effectively
