This is a fantastic opportunity to join a client that provides local government and services for the financial and commercial heart of London. They are seeking to employ a Principal Library Assistant on a 5-month contract to assist and support Library/Centre Manager or Librarian in the management of staff and services within their community libraries

 

 

What you will be doing

 

  • Deputising for the Library/Centre Manager or Librarian, in his/her absence as necessary including opening and locking up the library as required

  • Assisting with recruitment and selection of Library staff as required

  • Implementing policies & procedures as required

  • Conducting staff appraisal including assessment of staff training needs, training and supervising staff in the delivery of specific areas of work, organising induction and providing coaching and mentoring for new staff members

  • Providing information to satisfy personal, telephone, email and written enquiries. Dealing with customers’ suggestions and complaints and liaising as appropriate with other colleagues

  • Support the deployment of staff through timetabling, arranging cover and assisting with the annual leave and absence management process

  • Counting and reconciling cash and other receipts on a daily basis including controlling cash floats, preparing cash for banking and using the City Business Information System (CBIS) to order library materials

  • Dealing with overdue and lost stock

  • Assisting the Library/Centre Manager or Librarian, in providing a full and varied programme of events and activities to increase people’s enjoyment of the library service and offer them learning, cultural and social experiences within their local community

  • Overseeing customer surveys and the quarterly reservation supply time & enquiry counts, providing statistical reports to senior staff and other colleagues in the Department as required

  • Carrying out Manual Handling, Display Screen Equipment and/or other risk assessments

  • Performing the following duties in common with the Library Assistants:

    • issuing, discharging and renewing books and other library materials

    • assisting with stock-editing and shelf-checking

    • shelving and tidying stock Processing user reservations

  • Contributing to the management of specific areas of stock including preliminary checking of stock lists, assisting with selection and withdrawal, preparing items for binding and processing additions to stock

  • Organising, promoting, taking part in and supervising the provision of services in at least one of the following areas:

    • Health and Wellbeing

    • Children, young people and families

    • Music

    • Marketing, including social media

 

  • Liaising with colleagues within and outside the Department and attend internal and external meetings, as required.

  • Managing bookings for the community rooms in the library and invoicing for the use of these.

  • To undertake any other duties that may reasonably be requested appropriate to the grade including working at the other Lending Libraries.

 

Who you will be:

 

       Previous experience of work in a library or other customer service environment is desirable

·        Polite, friendly, reliable, confident, outgoing and possessed of the initiative, enthusiasm, tact, discretion and ability to fit into a busy lending library

       Have excellent social networking skills

       Have demonstrable understanding of equality of opportunity and how to apply this in relation to the duties of the post

       Excellent proven communication skills, both written and oral

       Have well-developed literacy and numeracy skills

       Experience of dealing with cash systems and automated tills

       Be able to use IT confidently and effectively

 

 

Recruitment – Note to Applicants

 

This is not a Monday to Friday post.There will be one late night per week (7.30 finish) and one Saturday per fortnight. Working Timetable is as follows:
