About the company

We are recruiting for a Collections Documentation Assistant for our Research Charity client in London. There is flexibility surrounding working days but ideally you will be able to work a minimum of 3 per week.

What you’ll be doing

The primary focus for this role, is to carry out a shelf audit of Arabic manuscripts and accurately records the shelf locations in a spreadsheet, and subsequently, editing catalogue records in the MARC based Library Management System. The role will also include some repackaging and relabelling of the manuscripts.

KEY OBJECTIVES:

  • Audit the collection of Arabic manuscripts, entering data into a spreadsheet to form an accurate finding aid of the shelf location for each manuscript
  • Enhance catalogue records in the library management system (Sierra ILS) to resolve anomalies such as duplicate records and numbering issues
  • Relabel and repackage individual manuscripts where required for correct identification or to meet conservation standards

Main Responsibilities:

  • Produce an accurate and up-to-date finding aid identifying the physical shelf location of around 1000 manuscripts written in Arabic
  • Identify and resolve any anomalies such as duplicate numbering or labelling issues
  • Undertake the work in accordance with company policies and principles
  • Undertaking any other work that may be reasonably required from time to time

Why you’ll be hired

To be considered for this role you will require:

  • Experience of documentation or cataloguing, listing, or indexing work, preferably in a library, archive or museum setting
  • Proficiency in using Excel spreadsheets to sort and manage data, including text
  • Database skills: proven experience of data entry or editing, with capacity to apply this experience to data editing of MARC21 encoded library data
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge and experience of library cataloguing standards, particularly MARC21 and RDA
  • Basic reading knowledge of Arabic, Persian or other languages written using the Arabic alphabet – Desirable
