35 hours per week

ASAP start until March 2020 (Maternity Cover)

About the company

Our client, a heritage museum in London, is actively looking to recruit an Archivist for a 6-month Maternity Contract to take on the responsibility for the on-going development and management of the organisations Archive, its collections and its procedures and services to its users. The post holder will facilitate public access to archival material whilst providing a professional level of service to all public enquirers and internal researchers.

What you will be doing

  • Develop and effectively manage the archive collections according to professional standards, including maintaining the museum’s collecting, acquisition, disposal and access policies
  • Work with the Museum Archivist and Records Manager to develop the archive collections and services, including strengthening the relationships with its clients
  • Work collaboratively with museum staff to provide professional reference and enquiry services to academics, researchers, and staff
  • Effectively manage the on-going cataloguing of the archive including preparation of catalogue records to go online
  • Work collaboratively with museum staff to monitor the state of the items in the collection and upgrade their storage where appropriate and/or agree conservation treatment
  • Work collaboratively with museum staff to co-ordinate loans from the archive and other external organisations, in accordance with the Loans Policy and procedures
  • Develop public, education and research resources in collaboration with museum staff that explain and promote the collection and make these accessible to visitors and online users
  • There is a possibility that this role will be responsible for line managing a member of staff in the future.  In which case, the post holder will be expected to effectively manage, motivate and support any archive staff and volunteers under their supervision, in accordance with museum policies and procedures
  • Prepare budget estimates and effectively manage income and expenditure, in accordance with the museum’s financial regulations
  • To undertake other duties as agreed with the line manager commensurate with the level and scope of the post that may be necessary from time to time
  • The post requires some lifting of moderately heavy objects such as boxes of archive records

This position requires a Basic Disclosure

Why you’ll be hired

  • Post-graduate qualification in archive administration or a comparable professional area
  • Post-graduate experience of archive collection management and development; including responsibility for the delivery of research and enquiry services in an archive, library or museum
  • Practical experience of cataloguing archives using a museum or archive database system (preferably MIMSY XG)
  • Ability to successfully communicate and work in partnership with staff at all levels across an organisation and with the senior management of an external stakeholder
  • Experience in increasing archival access and broadening user bases
  • Competency with standard office computer systems (preferably Word and Excel)
  • Experience of having successfully supervised people
  • Proven ability to effectively manage budgets
  • Excellent organisational skills with the ability to work to deadlines and effectively manage own time
  • Ability to professionally represent the Archive to other archives and museums and related organisations
