Indiana Jones* and the Raiders of the Lost Archive
Following on from Suzanne’s nod last week to the terrible loss of the Mackintosh Library at Glasgow School of Art last week I thought I’d share this altogether more cheering story from the Guardian on the rescue of Mali’s archives.
It’s an inspiring story of intrepid archivists rescuing nearly 400,000 books and manuscripts from the archive in Timbuktu during the Malian civil war. Although the archive was burnt by the rebel forces as they fled the city in January last year, around 95% of the holdings had already been smuggled to safety in Bamako.
