It is true that you never get a second chance to make a first impression. And when you meet a potential employer for the first time, you want to make a positive impact. There are three things you must do before you say a word.
Not a creepy, dead behind the eyes, forced smile. But the kind of smile you break out when you see your best friend or a really cute puppy or child falling over..
Make eye contact. This can take practice for some people but it is vital in forging a relationship and that all important trust between two people. No staring. And blinking is most definitely allowed. But look someone in the eyes when you are interacting with them.
Last but by no means least is number three.
It’s the essential business greeting and needs to firm but not too firm. I have been on the wrong end of some sweaty palmed very limp or way too hard or too long handshakes in my time. They’re not pleasant. Practice this with a friend.
Combine the three – smile, eye contact and a firm handshake – and you’ve made a good first impression.
